Au Coin du Feu, a characterful hotel in the heart of the Alps
The birth of the ski chalet
Housed in an authentic ski chalet, Au Coin du Feu embodies a slice of the history of Megève, the Alpine resort that was at the cutting edge of architecture in the 1930s. From the meeting between Noémie de Rothschild (who was at the origin of the resort’s creation) and Henry-Jacques Le Même, an architect and interior designer, this new type of accommodation was born in Megève, before being adopted by all the other resorts. In this modern mountain holiday concept, the ground floor was set aside for the boiler room, the wood store and the very first ski rooms.
The living spaces, including the kitchen and lounge, were located on the floors above, and were given beautiful openings onto the outdoor scenery. Bedrooms and bathrooms were placed on the top floor, beneath the roof. For the interior design, Le Même developed a mountain-inspired Art Deco style: geometric shapes derived from traditional Alpine motifs. The ‘V’ motif, one of his signatures, is a direct reference to the “wolf’s tooth” engraved on the traditional panelling from Queyras (a valley in the southern Alps with an ancient artisanal tradition). Au Coin du Feu in Megève has preserved the features that make for the charm of this accommodation: rational, practical spaces; simple, robust materials; elegant interior designs. The hotel has dedicated an entire floor to this major figure of twentieth-century architecture in France.
Au Coin du Feu, a family chalet in the mountains
When Nicolas Grivet stepped through the door of this independent hotel in 2013, looking for a business opportunity for a friend, he was struck by the charm of this history-laden chalet. Its ideal location just outside the village, the magnificent mountain vistas, the sunlight pouring into the lobby and the walled garden immediately appealed to this doctor who was born and raised in Marseille, but who is a mountain dweller at heart, through love and roots.
On his father’s side, his ancestors were from Saint-Gervais, then Sallanches, just a few kilometres from Megève, where he would spend holidays in the family home. He worked as an A&E doctor in Marseille before managing a cardiac rehabilitation clinic in the Alpilles, which he fully renovated. He is imbued with the values of the mountains – humility, integrity and authenticity – and worked tirelessly as a doctor to take care of others, with kindness and compassion.
He took over the hotel in 2013 and carried out renovation works, from 2014 to 2021, which have transformed this holiday location into a welcoming cocoon that is brimming with charm. Each room was enhanced to create beautiful, authentic spaces, where each object is chosen with care. From Mont Blanc granite to wood, local stone, pottery and fabrics from textile manufacturers in Savoy, Nicolas dipped into local know-how to create a genuine, refined and unpretentious living space.
Today, Nicolas works full-time at Au Coin du Feu, warmly welcoming each guest who steps through the door of his family chalet in the mountains, under the attentive gaze of Arthur and Victor, his two sons, who share his simplicity and authenticity, his passion for the mountains, and his love of delighting guests.
